A few years ago I received the DVD “a musicares person of the year tribute” honoring James Taylor as a present. I was quite surprised to see a new James’s pianist who played the piano, organ and synth so I checked in the credits and it was Larry Goldings. Then I bought the album “Careless Love” of Madeleine Peyroux from itunes and I was captured by the sounds of the keyboard. Curious to know who was on the synths I checked on the internet and found out that the player was again Larry. Then, I wasn’t so surprised anymore when I heard the last Norah Jones’s album “not to late” for the first time that most of the organ parts in her songs was played by Larry!
Larry is an hammond and piano player best known for jazz but also for funk, pop, and electronic/alternative music. Some of his more notable collaborations include tours and recordings with Carla Bley, Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, Jim Hall, Jon Hendricks, Pat Metheny, Maceo Parker, Madeleine Peyroux, John Pizzarelli, John Scofield, Curtis Stigers, James Taylor and Norah Jones.
In addition to performing, Larry is a composer, arranger, and producer of music. His music reflects a wide listening palette, from Beethoven and Gabriel Faure to contemporary artists like The Beatles, Randy Newman, and Björk. His compositions have been recorded by Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, Bob Dorough, Jim Hall, John Scofield, and Toots Thielemans, among others; and his songs and arrangements appear in the films "Space Cowboys" and John Madden's "Proof." His composing, arranging and producing credits include four albums with the vocalist Curtis Stigers in which one can hear their original co-writes as well as Larry's musical arrangements of a variety of contemporary songs and jazz standards.
